Jack Merrick Wilton CT Death: High School Senior Died by Suicide

Wilton Community Mourns Loss of High School Senior

The Wilton community is grieving the loss of Jack Merrick, an 18-year-old Wilton High School student who died Monday, Feb. 16, in what authorities have described as an apparent suicide.

In a press release issued Monday evening, the Wilton Police Department confirmed it is investigating the “untimely death of a teenage member of our community, an 18-year-old male.” Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the death is believed to be a suicide.

Deputy Chief Robert Cipolla said the incident occurred at a residential property at the Riverside Apartments, located at 141 Danbury Rd. He noted that police have been coordinating closely with school officials in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Superintendent of Schools Kevin Smith notified families in an email Monday evening, confirming the loss of a Wilton High School student and outlining available support services for students and staff.

In its statement, the police department urged parents and guardians to have open, age-appropriate conversations with their children about grief and emotional well-being. Officials also asked community members to be thoughtful in how the incident is discussed publicly, particularly on social media, emphasizing that speculation and insensitive commentary can intensify the impact on grieving families and young people.

Authorities underscored the importance of prevention and early-intervention efforts, stating they will continue working with school leadership and community partners to ensure that counseling and mental health resources remain accessible to students, families, and staff.

“The well-being of our community remains our priority,” the department said, adding that outreach initiatives are focused on providing guidance, resources, and safe spaces for those struggling in the wake of the loss.

Police indicated that no additional details will be released at this time out of respect for the family’s privacy.
